Father’s day is just around the corner – with that in mind, I wanted to get some tips for success from dads who work from home. Here’s what the two dads I interviewed had to say:
Q. How long have you worked from home?
A. bestoffitness (Creator of thebestoffitness.com)
I have been working from home for the past eight months after I got laid off from my job. I figured there wasn’t a better time to start my online fitness business while I had the opportunity.

I have worked from home in various roles for the past 30 years, initially as an exam marker in the UK and nowadays as a writer and content marketing consultant.
Q. How many children do you have, and how old are they?

I have two children, one boy and one girl. My son is Ames, 4 years old and my daughter Mavie is amost 1 year old.

I have 2 daughters, age 30 and 29. I started working from home on the exam-marking gig when my first daughter was born to make ends meet.
Q. What obstacles did you face when you started working from home?
A. bestoffitness (Creator of thebestoffitness.com)
Once I started working from home, I also started watching the kids which made working a little difficult. I would always try to wake up around 5am so I could work for a couple hours before they woke up. During the day, I would try to work a little more whenever I could and I know I did this too often. With that said, time is the biggest obstacle. It always seems like something comes up and there is never enough time but you just have to figure out ways around it.

I had three main obstacles:
- Finding time with a young child and a full-time teaching job
- Lack of space – I set up a desk in my bedroom
- Peace and quiet – Not easy with 2 young daughters
Q. What tips do you have for other fathers who want to work from home?
A. bestoffitness (Creator of thebestoffitness.com)
First you need to figure out which hours you get the most work done. If you’re a morning person, then wake up before everyone else and get to work, even if it’s at 3am. You also need to have some daily/weekly goals and don’t worry about when they get finished, just get them done and remember it takes time, things come up and you just have to try and stay relaxed.

You can do it if you want/need to do it enough.
- Get up an hour early when the rest of the house is quiet
- Put less effort into the day job
- Make time for yourself
- Make sure your sideline is something you enjoy
